3-D Model of San Francisco

In this week’s lab, i am privileged to extract geographic data from the USGS website and use them to generate my own digital elevation models. I have chosen the Bay Area, including the city of San Francisco, Oakland, and a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area as the focus of my maps. I chose this region because i have relatives there whom i visit occassionally, and also the fact that i used to attend college proximate to SF. In addition, as i traveled to my relatives’ house, i noticed how some of the roads of SF are in steep angles; thus sparked my curiosity as to how hilly SF actually is. In result, i created these models, and they have given me a good sense of the topography in that area, explaning the steepness. While the shaded-relief map, the slope map, and the aspect map show the Bay Area in a bird’s-eye view, indicating the direction and the degree of steepness, the 3-D model shows the landmass elevation with a side-view, allowing viewers to understand why the population density is high in an area like SF city that has a relatively low elevation compared to mountainous areas that surround it.
